Video of collapse of a lane of expressway in Unnao goes viral on social media. NHAI started repair work, questions raised on construction quality.
Knews Desk- The very first rain on Uttar Pradesh’s ambitious Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway has raised questions about the construction quality. Only 12 days had passed since the inauguration of this expressway, built at a cost of about ₹ 4200 crore, when a part of the road caved in Unnao. After the video of the incident went viral on social media, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has started repair work on the spot.
A portion about four meters long and two meters wide caved in near kilometer number 64 on the lane going from Kanpur to Lucknow. As soon as the video of the road collapse surfaced on social media, it quickly went viral. After this the NHAI team reached the spot and started repairing the damaged part.
Inauguration took place on 13th July
The 63 km long Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway was inaugurated on July 13 by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. During the inauguration ceremony, it was said to be built with state-of-the-art technology and one of the strongest expressways in the state.
This technical flaw in this expressway, built at a cost of about ₹ 4200 crore, just 12 days after its inauguration, has raised questions on the construction quality and monitoring system. Many discussions have started among the people regarding the incident of road subsidence in the first rain.
Opposition targeted the government
After the video of the incident went viral, opposition parties have also started cornering the government. Many leaders, including the Samajwadi Party, have raised questions on the quality of the construction work by sharing videos on social media and have demanded an impartial investigation into the entire matter.
At present the NHAI team is busy repairing the damaged part. Besides, the reasons behind the road subsidence are also being investigated. Only after the investigation report comes, it will be clear whether the road sank due to technical reasons or some construction defect is responsible for it.
