Rishikanta Singh wins silver in weightlifting to secure India's 2nd medal at Commonwealth Games 2026

New Delhi: Weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanabam clinched India’s second medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Sunday, July 26, by bagging a silver medal in the men’s 60kg category. The Manipur athlete created a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch category on his way to finishing in the second spot on the podium in Glasgow.

Rishikanta lifted a total of 264 kg in the final of the men’s 60 kg weightlifting to finish on the podium. While he lifted a record 121 kg in the snatch round, the Indian weightlifter couldn’t go beyond his first successful attempt of 143kg in the clean & jerk category to settle for the silver.

Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq won the gold medal with a total lift of 273kg. The Malaysian lifted 121 kg in snatch and an impressive 152 kg in the clean and jerk round to win his second consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. He won the gold medal in the men’s 55kg category in the last edition of the competition in Birmingham in 2022.

In the final, Rishikanta started with a 116kg lift in his first attempt in the snatch round. He then successfully lifted 119kg in his second attempt and finished with a 121kg lift in his final third attempt. He started with a 143kg lift in the clean & jerk category. Rishikanta attempted to lift 148kg and 151kg, respectively, in his next two attempts in the clean & jerk round, however, he failed to do so.

Meanwhile, Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq successfully lifted 145 kg, 149 kg, and 152 kg in his three attempts, respectively, in the clean & jerk round. Earlier, he matched Rishikanta’s best attempt of 121 kg in the snatch category. The Malaysian recorded the best of a total of 273kg (121 kg snatch + 152kg clean & jerk) to set a new Commonwealth Games record.

Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya claimed the bronze medal for finishing third with a total of 260 kg (115kg in snatch and 145kg in clean & jerk).

1st male weightlifter from Manipur to win CWG medal

Rihikanta Singh is also the first-ever male weightlifter from Manipur to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games. Several women weightlifters, including Mirabai Chanu from Manipur have won medals for India at the Commonwealth Games. However, Rishikanta is the first male weightlifter to have achieved the feat.
