India’s gold medal account opened

Glasgow: India has won its first gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2026. Star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu performed brilliantly in the women’s 49 kg category and won the gold medal by lifting a total weight of 190 kg (85 kg snatch + 105 kg clean and jerk). With this achievement, India’s gold medal account has been opened.

Increase in India’s medal tally

After Mirabai’s victory, India now has a total of 3 medals, which include 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Earlier, Rishikant Singh had won a silver medal in the men’s 60 kg category, while Jhandu Kumar won a bronze medal in Para Powerlifting. Due to these performances, India has reached seventh place in the medal table. At the same time, Australia remains on top with a total of 24 medals including 12 gold.

Rishikant continuously impressed
This is Rishikant Singh’s second Commonwealth Games. Earlier, he had represented India in the 55 kg category at Birmingham 2022. This time he entered the new weight category and performed brilliantly and won the country a silver medal. He is also the winner of the current Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.


Rishikant’s journey

The journey started from Manipur
Rishikant Singh started weightlifting in 2009 from Manipur Sports Academy. After his initial performance, he was selected at the training center of Sports Authority of India (SAI). After this he joined the sports program of the Indian Navy and then the Indian Army, where he received high level training. Rishikant, a resident of Imphal West, Manipur, has two brothers in his family, out of which the elder brother is serving in the Indian Army. Due to his hard work and discipline, Rishikant is today counted among the rising stars of Indian weightlifting. Mirabai Chanu’s gold medal is a great start to India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign.
