Manchester United may have landed on a sensible answer for one of their more interesting young assets, with Radek Vitek now emerging as a serious target for Middlesbrough. Credit goes to Lyall Thomas, who says Boro’s interest is genuine and that the potential move is at its “early stages”.

From United’s point of view, this looks like one of those deals that checks several boxes at the same time. Vitek has built momentum after an excellent loan spell at Bristol City, Middlesbrough need a goalkeeper, and the player himself seems ready for the next major step in his career. It is the kind of transfer that can work for everyone if the structure is right.

The 22-year-old did a lot to lift his reputation in 2025/26. Twelve clean sheets in 41 Championship appearances is a strong return, and there was clearly more than just the raw numbers behind the growing attention. His displays were even described as “ridiculous”, which says plenty about the level he reached during his spell at Ashton Gate.

That form has naturally attracted interest from elsewhere as well. Celtic have been linked, but Middlesbrough now appear best placed to make something happen. The deal could be complex, with talks said to be underway, but the important point is that there is real movement.

Vitek’s own words also point to a player looking for clarity. After United’s 5-0 friendly win over Rosenborg, he said: “I’m ready for both (loan or permanent move), to be fair. It depends on what the club wants and also on the options. There has been a few interests on the table. We’re hoping to choose the best one and hopefully it will happen soon.”

If Middlesbrough are searching for a possible replacement for Solomon Brynn, Vitek looks like a strong option. He already understands the pace and physical demands of the Championship, and that is important. There would be no long adjustment period, and there is every chance he could arrive ready to go straight into the team.

For the player, regular football must remain the main priority. He has returned to Carrington, has featured twice in pre-season, and has clearly done enough to stay in the conversation. Even so, the path to first-team football at Old Trafford still appears blocked.

There is also a broader financial angle to this. United have already put significant money into the squad this summer, with £50 million spent on Andrey Santos and another £35 million on Youri Tielemans. More signings are still wanted, with another midfielder, at least one full-back and possibly another forward all on the agenda.

That is why sales matter. Vitek is described as a “saleable asset”, and that seems fair. He is also “too good to warm the bench”, which is probably the clearest argument for a move. With Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir ahead of him in the current pecking order, a departure feels logical rather than harsh.

If Middlesbrough can turn these early discussions into a proper agreement, United would bring in funds, Boro would solve a key problem, and Vitek would get the platform his recent progress deserves. Sometimes the smartest transfers are not the loudest ones, and this has the look of one that could age very well.
