Motion sickness can turn an enjoyable journey into an uncomfortable experience, causing nausea, dizziness, sweating, and even vomiting. It happens when your eyes, inner ears, and body send conflicting signals to the brain during travel. Fortunately, a few simple habits can help reduce symptoms and make your trip more comfortable.
1. Choose the Right Seat
Where you sit can make a big difference. In a car, sit in the front passenger seat. On a bus, choose a seat near the front. On a plane, opt for a seat over the wings, and on a boat, stay on the lower deck near the centre where movement is minimal.
2. Keep Your Eyes on the Horizon
Looking at a stable point in the distance helps your brain match what your eyes see with what your inner ear senses. Avoid reading books or using your phone during the journey, as this can worsen motion sickness.
3. Eat Light and Stay Hydrated
Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy meals before travelling. Instead, choose light snacks and drink plenty of water. Ginger tea, ginger candies, or peppermint may also help ease nausea in some people.
4. Try Medication if Needed
If you frequently experience motion sickness, over-the-counter medications such as dimenhydrinate or meclizine may help prevent symptoms. However, these medicines can cause drowsiness, so they should be used only after consulting a healthcare professional or following the product instructions.
Most cases of motion sickness improve once the journey ends. However, if symptoms are severe, persistent, or occur even without travelling, consult a healthcare provider to rule out other underlying conditions.
