Chaturmas starts from Devshayani Ekadashi and ends 4 months later. It is believed that during this period Lord Vishnu goes to rest in the Milky Way for four months. Chaturmas has special importance in Sanatan Dharma.
When will Chaturmas start?Every year Chaturmas begins on Ekadashi of Devshaya of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. It concludes with the Ekadashi of Devprabodhi. According to religious beliefs, on Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu goes to rest in the Milky Sea for four months, after which Lord Mahadev takes over the management of creation. Lord Vishnu gets up and rests till Ekadashi. This period is called Chaturmas and during this period all Manglik functions including marriages are stopped.
When is Chaturmas starting?According to the Vedic calendar, Chaturmas is going to start on July 25. This holy period will end on November 20. During this period all manglik works are prohibited and one gets manifold fruits of Japa, Tapa and charity.
Rules of Chaturmas:Chaturmas is associated with the rainy season and the humidity in the atmosphere increases during this period. The risk of infection and illness is also high. Hence during Chaturmas always eat sattvic food and practice celibacy.
During Chaturmas, marriage, house entry and other manglik functions are prohibited. No new works should be started during this time. Apart from this, cutting of trees and leaves should also be avoided during these four months.
During the 4 months of Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva should be meditated on as much as possible. You can chant ‘ॐ namo bhagavate vasudevay’ or ‘ॐ namah shivay’ mantra daily during this time.
Tamasic food like meat, alcohol, onion and garlic should not be consumed during Chaturmas.
