Raipur. Kumar from Janjgir-Champa (Chhattisgarh) from the Department of Rural Technology of Guru Ghasidas University (GGV). Surbhi Pandey has been awarded Doctorate (PhD) degree. He successfully completed his research work under the guidance of Dr. Bhaskar Chaurasia. The topic of his research was 'Studies on Isolation and Identification of Endophytic Fungi and Their Bioactive Molecules from Curcuma caesia Roxb'.
This research is based on the identification and possible use of endophytic fungi found in plants and the bioactive molecules obtained from them. Experts believe that this study is going to make an important contribution in the field of rural technology and biotechnology.
Curcuma caesia Research: Important scientific study done on black turmeric
During her research presentation, Surabhi Pandey told that Curcuma cassia (black turmeric) is an important medicinal plant, which has been used in traditional medical systems for years. The main objective of this research was to isolate endophytic fungi from black turmeric leaves and rhizomes, identify them and study the bioactive molecules produced by them.
Endophytic Fungi Study: Identification of 22 endophytic fungi, use of modern techniques
A total of 22 endophytic fungal isolates were obtained during the research. These were identified with the help of morphological studies and modern MALDI-TOF analysis. After this, enzyme production in the selected fungi and their antimicrobial capacity were tested. Also, by doing GC-MS analysis of plant and fungal extracts, various bioactive compounds present in them were identified.
HER2 Protein Molecular Docking: Important hint towards anti-cancer drugs
The potential medicinal utility of the bioactive compounds obtained in the research was assessed using molecular docking technique against HER2 protein. Some compounds in the study showed satisfactory binding ability, which appears to strengthen the prospects for the development of anticancer drugs in the future. Research findings suggest that black turmeric and the endophytic fungi present in it may be important sources of bioactive compounds. These can be used in future to create new antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs and in various fields of biotechnology.

Biotechnology Research: New paths can open in medicine, agriculture and biotechnology
Surabhi Pandey says that plant fungi and the bioactive molecules obtained from them are rapidly gaining importance in the fields of medicine, agriculture and biotechnology. Endophytic fungi live harmlessly within plant tissues and produce important bioactive molecules such as alkaloids, terpenoids and phenolic compounds. On the basis of these compounds, new medicines can be developed in future for the treatment of many serious diseases including cancer and infection. This is the reason why the scientific community considers the research being done in this area to be very important.
