The years old bridge built on Kamla river in Darbhanga district is now in a dilapidated condition. Large cracks have started appearing in the safety walls of the bridge, due to which the fear of an accident has increased among the local people. Thousands of people, school children, farmers, employees and small and big vehicles pass through this bridge every day. Despite this, there is resentment among the villagers as no concrete initiative has been taken till now to improve the condition of the bridge or to construct a new bridge.

Local people say that the bridge has been demanding repairs for a long time, but only formal inspections are conducted by the concerned department. Over time, the bridge’s railings and safety walls became weak. Questions are being raised on the strength of the bridge due to crumbling concrete and increasing cracks at many places.

Villagers say that the situation becomes more worrying during the rainy season. The effect of constant moisture and rising water level of Kamla River is also visible on the structure of the bridge. People fear that if necessary repairs or a new bridge are not made in time, a major accident may occur in the future.

This bridge connects many nearby villages to the district headquarters and other important markets. Every day thousands of people travel through this route to reach schools, colleges, hospitals, government offices and business centres. This bridge is also very important for the farmers, because through this route the agricultural produce is transported to the markets. In such a situation, the poor condition of the bridge is directly impacting the local life and economic activities.

The villagers have demanded the construction of a new bridge from the administration and public representatives soon. He says temporary repairs alone will not solve the problem. In view of the increasing traffic and old structure, a new and stronger bridge should be built with modern technology, so that people can get the facility of safe movement in the coming years.

According to the local people, many times written complaints have been given to the concerned department and administration. This issue was also raised before the public representatives, but till now no concrete decision has been taken. The villagers have warned that if action is not taken soon, they will be forced to agitate.

Road and bridge experts say that it is necessary to undergo technical inspection and structural audit of any old bridge from time to time. If any cracks or weaknesses in the structure are seen then a decision should be taken for immediate repair or new construction if necessary, so that the possibility of an accident can be avoided.

It has been told by the administration that information about the condition of the bridge has been given to the concerned department. Necessary action will be taken after inspection by the technical team. If the report finds the bridge unsafe, a proposal for repair or construction of a new bridge will be prepared.

At present, the biggest demand of the villagers is that the condition of the bridge should be taken seriously and a permanent solution should be found soon. He says that it is not just a bridge, but an important route for the everyday life, education, health, farming and employment of thousands of people. Therefore, instead of waiting for a major accident, it is very important to take effective steps in time.
