New Delhi : A tragic road crash on the Delhi-Lucknow highway late Sunday night claimed three lives and left eight others severely injured, police said. The accident took place near Syana Chowpla in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district when a driver sharply swerved to avoid hitting a stray cow on the road.

How the crash happened

According to the police, a group of young men from Mustafabad, Delhi, were driving a Mahindra Scorpio SUV to Bijnor to attend a wedding.

While driving through the Garh area, a cow unexpectedly ran onto the highway. The driver swerved sharply to save the animal but ended up losing control of the vehicle. The Scorpio hit the cow, smashed through the road divider, and crashed head-on into a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga coming from the opposite direction.

A person on a passing scooter was also caught in the violent impact and crushed as the two vehicles collided. Both cars were completely destroyed, and the accident caused panic and a long traffic jam on the highway.

Rescue work and victims

Nearby residents and police officers rushed to the scene to pull victims from the shamble. Three men died on the spot and were identified by authorities as Sarfaraz (45), Afzal (37), and Abrar (48); all residents of Delhi. Their families have been notified, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations.

Eight other people suffered serious injuries. Emergency workers brought them to a local community health center for immediate first aid, after which two critically injured victims were transferred to Meerut Medical College for specialized care. The remaining six are currently getting treated at local hospitals.

Garh Station House Officer (SHO) Devendra Singh Bisht confirmed that emergency crews used cranes to move the damaged vehicles off the road and cleared the traffic jam. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
