Marvel Studios has officially found its next Black Panther. British actor David Jonsson was announced as the new face of the franchise during a Comic-Con panel in San Diego on July 25, stepping into a role that has remained deeply tied to the legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman since his death in 2020. The announcement marks a major turning point for the franchise, six years after Boseman’s passing forced Marvel to reimagine the future of Wakanda’s throne entirely.

Born on September 4, 1993, Jonsson began his career on the London stage, making his professional debut in Mary Stuart at the Almeida Theatre before transferring to the West End. He later appeared alongside David Tennant in Don Juan in Soho. His television breakout came through the BBC and HBO drama Industry, where he played Gus Sackey across its first two seasons, a role that required him to study environments like Eton College and Oxford University to authentically portray a background different from his own.
Jonsson’s film career gained significant momentum with Rye Lane, which premiered to acclaim at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, followed by his performance as the synthetic character Andy in 2024’s Alien: Romulus, a role that earned him the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2025. He also starred in The Long Walk and Wasteman, the latter earning him a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Lead Performance.
David Jonsson To Play The New Black PantherDirector Ryan Coogler revealed the casting on stage alongside Black Panther veterans Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, as well as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Jonsson will play T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint, the grown son of Boseman’s T’Challa, in Black Panther III, set for release on December 15, 2028. The character was first introduced to audiences in the post-credits scene of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, appearing as a young child named Toussaint before being revealed as T’Challa’s heir.
Accepting the role on stage, Jonsson expressed gratitude for joining the franchise, saying he preferred to let his performance speak for itself rather than reveal too much in advance. Duke, who has played M’Baku across the franchise, later told Variety that he trusts David Jonsson as an artist and expects him to be a strong addition to the Black Panther legacy.

David Jonsson To Take Over From Chadwick BosemanThe casting comes six years after Chadwick Boseman’s death from colon cancer in 2020, a loss that forced Marvel to substantially rework the plans for Wakanda Forever. Rather than recasting T’Challa at the time, the studio chose to honor Boseman by having the film center on grief and succession, ultimately introducing Letitia Wright’s Shuri as the new Black Panther following her brother’s death within the story. The original 2018 Black Panther, which launched Boseman to global stardom, became the first superhero film nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, while its sequel earned $859 million.
