Maruti Suzuki is known to be working on a small electric hatchback. When launched, it will rival the Tata Tiago.EV in India. It will be the production version of the Vision e-Sky showcased in Japan, previously. The latest spy sighting indicates that this project has entered the testing phase.

The e-Sky-based EV will be an electric hatchback. It is likely to go on sale globally in the financial year 2026-27 and may be brought to India soon after. The latest spy picture is not from India. It, however, gives a clear idea of the car’s overall stance and silhouette. It resembles the Vision e-Sky concept to a good extent.

The test mules shown in this picture have partial camouflage. We can understand that they are both finished in Blue body colour and have their roofs painted White. This is a colour-scheme that we had previously seen on the concept. The production version, however, seems to have transitioned to a set of new, practical headlamp units.

The show car had aero-optimised alloy wheels. However, the spied mules seem to be using a set of regular steel wheels. We would most likely see mules running aero-wheels in later stages of testing. Another key difference is the mirror design. The production version gets normal side view mirrors, while the concept had sleeker units. And finally, the production-spec seems to have regular door handles. The concept, if you recollect, had flush-fitting units.

The production-spec EV is expected to come with a long array of features. Camera units for the 360-degree camera and ADAS suite are visible in this spy image.

The latest spy sighting gives us a fair idea of how the design has been evolving. It may not look as radical or futuristic as the concept. We do know that the production version will come with LED headlamps and DRLs. The overall design language will align with those of Maruti Suzuki’s newer models.

The concept car was based on Suzuki’s ‘Unique, Smart, Positive’ design philosophy. This is strictly an urban electric car. It is very compact and has ‘almost tiny’ overhangs even in the spy shot. As was seen in the concept, the production form will also come with a rear spoiler. The car will also have prominent wheel arches, and a flat nose and tail. Maruti’s design team seems to have taken a minimalistic approach with its design.

The production version of Vision e-Sky will be underpinned by Maruti Suzuki’s new-age K-EV platform. This is a dedicated EV platform and will thus help in maximising cabin room. The overall vehicle length will be approximately 3.39 metres. (The concept was 3,395mm long, 1,475mm wide, and had a height of 1,625mm. The same are likely to be retained on the production-spec as well).

When brought to India, Maruti Suzuki will localise the platform heavily, to keep costs under check. Battery details of this electric car haven’t yet been disclosed. However, the expected range is around 270km per charge- close to that of the Tiago.EV. Sources suggest the possibility of a 29kWh unit.

The dedicated EV platform will ensure maximum interior space. This will, in fact, be an electric Kei car in many global markets. The interior will have a clean, tech-focussed design. The steering wheel on the concept had a squircle shape. The same can be expected on the production version as well. It will have integrated controls as well. The dashboard will have dual displays- a digital driver’s display and a central infotainment system. Features like ambient lighting, selectable drive modes, ADAS, and more are expected to be present.

Suzuki will launch the production version of this electric hatchback in global markets, before bringing it to India. Suzuki UK boss David Kateley has already confirmed the company’s intentions to launch a small electric hatchback in the UK- an A-segment EV which will compete primarily with the Honda Super-N.

In the Indian context, this electric car will face competition from models like the Tata Tiago.EV (which recently got a major fracelift) and the MG Comet.
