Carrying the entire weight of India’s hopes in the 23rd Commonwealth Games on her strong shoulders, 31-year-old Mirabai Chanu has won the country’s first gold medal by lifting a total weight of 190 kg in the women’s 48 kg event. With this historic victory, Chanu completed her brilliant hat-trick of winning three consecutive gold medals in the Commonwealth Games.

Mirabai had fasted for two days

After the victory, when Mirabai stood on the podium with the gold medal during the national anthem, tears of joy welled up in her eyes. The story behind this victory of Mirabai has been full of struggle. To maintain her weight, Mirabai had given up food and water for two days. When the journalists reached him as soon as the match was over, the first words that came out of his mouth were: Hurry up, I haven’t eaten anything for 2 days.

New record made in Commonwealth Games

The beginning of the match was not as expected for Mirabai. She missed her first attempt (82 kg) in the snatch, but Mirabai immediately composed herself and lifted 82 kg and then 85 kg in the second attempt to create a new Commonwealth record. Here too, after failure in the first attempt, he broke the Commonwealth Games record by lifting 105 kg in the second attempt. He registered his name in the record books by lifting a total weight of 190 kg (85kg + 105kg).

Mirabai looked very emotional after the victory. He gave the credit for his success to his mother and coach Vijay Sharma. He said that he stood by me in all my bad and good times.
