The Government of Nepal has permitted Indian and Nepali citizens to carry Indian currency worth up to ₹25,000 into and out of Nepal. However, this facility applies only to Indian currency notes of ₹200 and ₹500 denominations issued after November 9, 2016.

Nepal's central bank, the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), has issued a new notice regarding this. According to the notice, any Indian or Nepali citizen can carry Indian notes of ₹200 and ₹500 denominations—up to a total value of ₹25,000—into Nepal from India or vice versa.

This rule will be implemented under existing foreign exchange laws. However, the old Indian currency notes of ₹500 and ₹1,000 denominations issued before demonetization remain completely banned in Nepal; they can neither be taken into the country nor used there. The Nepal Rastra Bank stated that this rule had previously been published in the Nepal Gazette on February 11. The notice has now been re-issued to clarify the regulations and eliminate any confusion among the public.

**Rupees can be carried from India**
Guru Prasad Paudel, spokesperson for the Nepal Rastra Bank, stated that Nepali citizens can bring Indian currency into Nepal only from India; they cannot bring Indian notes into Nepal from a third country. Similarly, carrying Indian currency from Nepal to any other country is not permitted. The movement of Indian currency is restricted to travel between India and Nepal only.

The Government of Nepal believes that this decision will greatly benefit tourists visiting from India and individuals engaged in trade between the two nations. India and Nepal share an open border, and hundreds of thousands of Indian tourists visit Nepal annually. At the same time, a large number of Nepali citizens work, study, and conduct business in India. Consequently, this new rule will facilitate easier travel and financial transactions for the people of both countries.
