New Delhi: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared Spider-Man: Brand New Day for theatrical release in India with a UA certificate, but not before asking the makers to implement three modifications.

Among the required changes is the removal of a lip-lock sequence, which has been excised from the final version approved for exhibition.

Apart from the visual edit, the certification board has also instructed the filmmakers to mute certain objectionable words featured in the film’s dialogues. In addition, scenes depicting the consumption of alcohol will carry the mandatory static health warning, in line with the CBFC’s certification guidelines.

Following these changes, the superhero film has been granted a UA certificate, allowing audiences aged 13 years and above to watch it with parental guidance. The certification clears the way for the film’s theatrical release in the country.

This is not the first time a film in the franchise has undergone edits for its Indian release. The previous installment also faced CBFC modifications, with a combined 33 seconds trimmed from two kissing sequences. The board had additionally asked for the removal of a particular gesture before issuing its certificate.

In terms of runtime, the latest chapter is noticeably longer than its predecessor. The new film runs approximately 15 minutes more than the previous installment, making it the lengthiest entry between the two releases.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland, Zendeya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, Jon Bernthal, and Tramell Tillman. The film is scheduled to release worldwide on July 31.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man is expected to open around USD 180-190 million in North America. Last week, Global Box Office reported that following a “massive new spike” in pre-sales, the film is now projected to beat No Way Home. It also predicted that the film may rake in USD 300 million in North America. And if that happens, the film would become the second-biggest opening of all-time for Hollywood, after Avengers: Endgame, which made a debut with USD 357 million.
