Indian athlete Tejas Shirse on Monday qualified for the final of the men's 110m hurdles at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, finishing third in his heat. To make the finals, Shirase, who was competing in heat one, had to either finish in the top three in his heat or finish in the top eight in both the heats combined. According to ESPN, the athlete finished third in his heat with a timing of 13.76 seconds. Despite a poor start, Tejas managed to make it to the finals. The top two places in their heat were England's Samuel Bennett (13.20 seconds) and Jamaica's Jerome Campbell (13.33 seconds).

Gurinderveer out of 100 meter race, disappointment for India

Earlier, Indian sprinter Gurindervir Singh, who was one of the country's most promising medal prospects at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, crashed out of the heats during the men's 100m event, ending his medal dreams and dealing a blow to India's overall medal chances.

Before the CWG, Gurindervir had made headlines by becoming the first Indian to clock sub-10.10 seconds in the men's 100m, winning the Federation Cup in Ranchi in May with a sensational national record time of 10.09 seconds. The 24-year-old had bettered the previous national record by 0.06 seconds, set by Animesh Kujur in the semi-finals just a day earlier.

But despite so many expectations, Gurindervir, who was experiencing the Commonwealth Games for the first time, could not live up to the expectations. In the heats, Gurindervir recorded a time of 10.39 seconds, which was not enough to earn him a semi-final berth. Only the top 17 athletes were getting a chance in the semi-finals. After all eleven heats, Gurindervir stood 28th among 73 runners. According to ESPN, a time of 10.24 seconds could have allowed him to reach the semi-finals, but that was not to be the case for the rising Indian athlete on his CWG debut.

Murali Srishankar in the final of long jump

Commonwealth Games silver medalist Murali Sreeshankar has also made it to the men's long jump final. Sreeshankar, a 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, needed only one attempt to qualify for the men's long jump final. According to ESPN, the Indian crossed the automatic qualification mark of 8.00m with a jump of 8.01m in his opening attempt. The athletes who crossed the 8.00 m mark or finished in the top 12 advanced to the finals. Sreeshankar's effort comfortably confirmed his place as he aims to better the silver medal he won in Birmingham four years ago. (ANI)
