Manchester City’s summer checklist still includes one key task: bringing in another winger. So far, a clear candidate for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders to fill that role has not yet come to the fore. Manchester City will not approve Savinho’s sale to Tottenham unless they first secure a replacement. A number of wingers have been mentioned as possible targets for City, but for several reasons there does not appear to be an obvious choice at this point. At the moment, City’s search for another winger has been a frustrating process to follow from the outside.

Manchester City have already been linked this summer with PSG winger Ibrahim Mbaye, Everton’s adaptable attacker Iliman Ndiaye and, more recently, Chelsea’s Portuguese international Pedro Neto, with all three named as possible transfer targets. Even so, there seems to be a reason against City going for each of those players individually. In Ndiaye’s case, perhaps he was never really a major target for Manchester City in the first place.

Get Football Football News France has passed on a report from journalist Romain Molina saying there are concerns around PSG winger Ibrahim Mbaye’s situation. It is reported that Mbaye’s inner circle feel he should have been used more often by PSG. They believe Mbaye is a better talent than Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembélé. It is also reported that Mbaye had problems arriving on time for PSG training, along with fluctuating weight issues, which led to him slipping down the pecking order at the European champions. In addition, PSG were reportedly unhappy with leaks from Mbaye’s camp, which they believe came from the player’s father.

It is also reported that Manchester City are interested in signing Ibrahim Mbaye this summer. However, Romain Molina’s report does look like a major warning sign. If any of the reported issues around Mbaye are true, and there is no reason to think they are not, would City really risk spending heavily on him? Perhaps not.

Mark Brus has reported through his exclusive Daily Briefing column that Manchester City are interested in signing Chelsea winger Pedro Neto this summer. Brus says Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has ‘concrete interest’ in adding the Portuguese international to his squad. Finally, it is reported that Chelsea would ask for €80 million to sell Pedro Neto.

It would seem extremely unlikely that Manchester City would move for Pedro Neto this summer. The reported fee for a player who, when fully fit, is a Premier League-proven winger is far too high. Pedro Neto’s injury record would also appear to rule out that possible move. The reported price and the relationship between Manchester City and Chelsea would seemingly shut the door on this transfer as well.

Alan Nixon reported earlier this summer that Manchester City did have an interest in Everton’s Senegalese international Iliman Ndiaye. However, that deal may now be off the table. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal have started talks to sign Ndiaye this summer. If Ndiaye was a target for City, it would be highly unlikely that they would allow another club to enter the race. Also, the chances are slim that Manchester City will get drawn into a ‘bidding war’ with a Saudi Pro League club for any player.

In some cases, and strongly so in others, there is a case for Manchester City not to move for Ibrahim Mbaye, Pedro Neto or Iliman Ndiaye. Each of them has clear strengths and undeniable potential, but you do wonder whether the arguments against signing each player rule them out of a summer move to the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. If that turns out to be true, City’s search for a winger will go on.

Even so, there is another possible outcome that remains very much in play. Maybe Manchester City’s first-choice target to fill a wing role in Enzo Maresca’s squad has not yet emerged. That could well be the situation given how much time is still left in the summer transfer window. In fact, that does seem the most likely possibility at this stage. It may take a week or two, or even longer, for this particular scenario to unfold.

Manchester City are still looking to add another winger to Enzo Maresca’s squad. On the face of it, City’s pursuit of a winger has been a frustrating one. While that is how it looks right now, if City do sign another winger, it may well not feel that way by the time the transfer window closes.
