Glasgow: Indians continue to shine at the weightlifting arena of the Commonwealth Games 2026.

Gyaneshwari Yadav added to the nation’s medal tally by clinching silver in Women’s 53 kg category before Bindyarani Devi claimed bronze in Women’s 58 kg event on Monday.

The 23-year-old Gyaneshwari from Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon, one of India’s most promising young lifters, managed a total lift of 199 kg (88 kg in snatch and 111 kg in clean and jerk).

A sub-inspector with Chhattisgarh Police, Gyaneshwari lost out to Nigerian Onome Omolola Didih, who lifted an aggregate of 206 kg.

Gyaneshwari finished well clear of bronze-medallist Rebeka Groulx of Canada (178 kg).

Bindyarani, from Manipur, finished third with a total lift of 199 kg (87 kg in snatch and 112 kg in clean and jerk).

Out of India’s six medals so far, five have come courtesy of weightlifters. Mirabai Chanu’s lone gold apart, Indian lifters have earned three silver (Rishikanta Singh, Raja Muthupandi and Gyaneshwari) and a bronze (Bindyarani).

Completing the overall tally thus far is another bronze medal won by para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar.

Mixed bag in Athletics

India had a mixed day on the opening day of athletics competition.

Murali Sreeshankar qualified for the Men’s Long Jump final with an effort of 8.01 metres on his first attempt. Lokesh Sathyanathan joined him after finishing seventh overall by going a distance of 7.77 metres.

Tejas Shirse advanced to the Men’s 110m Hurdles final, clocking 13.76 seconds in his heat.

The big disappointment came in the form of sprinter Gurindervir Singh. The national record-holder missed out on the Men’s 100m semis after finishing second in his heat in a time of 10.39 seconds.

It was well below his personal best and national record of 10.09.
