Sarvesh Kushare Achieves Historic Silver Medal

In a remarkable achievement, Indian high jumper Sarvesh Kushare secured the silver medal in the men's high jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking him as the first Indian to achieve this feat in the event's history. He successfully cleared a height of 2.25 meters during the final but fell short of gold after three attempts at 2.28 meters.

Jamaica's Romaine Beckford also cleared 2.25 meters but won the gold medal based on countback, having a more consistent performance. England's Kimani Jack took home the bronze with a best jump of 2.20 meters, as reported by ESPN. Kushare required his third attempt to clear 2.25 meters, while Beckford accomplished this on his first attempt, a crucial difference in the competition for the top spot.

Kushare's Performance and Other Competitors

Entering the competition with impressive momentum, Kushare had recently set a new national record of 2.31 meters at the National Inter-State Championships just a month prior. In Glasgow, he navigated the initial heights with confidence before achieving his best clearance of 2.25 meters, securing his place on the podium.

Other Indian athletes faced varied outcomes in the event. Aadarsh Ram finished in fifth place, while Tejaswin Shankar, who won a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, withdrew after his first jump.

India's Medal Count at Glasgow 2026

Kushare's silver medal contributed to India's tally, bringing the total to five silver medals and ten overall at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. To date, India has achieved two gold, five silver, and three bronze medals.

Sharmila Dhankar Wins Gold

In another highlight, Sharmila Dhankar secured India's second gold medal by winning the women's shot put F57 event with a season-best throw of 9.81 meters. She outperformed Ghana's Zinabu Issah, who recorded 8.65 meters, while fellow Indian Shilpa Shyla earned the bronze after Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi was disqualified.
