In August 2026, millions of Americans relying on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will notice a change in their payment schedule. However, there is no cause for alarm. This adjustment is a result of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) payment timetable, not a cut or halt in benefits. The SSA modifies payment dates when the first of the month coincides with a weekend or federal holiday. Since August 1, 2026, is a Saturday, SSI payments will be distributed on Friday, July 31.
Understanding the Absence of August Payments
Typically, SSI benefits are disbursed on the first day of each month. Yet, when this date lands on a weekend or holiday, the SSA issues payments on the preceding business day. Consequently, beneficiaries will receive their August payment on July 31, resulting in no additional payment in August. It is important to note that recipients will still obtain their full monthly benefits.
Who Qualifies for Supplemental Security Income?
Supplemental Security Income offers monthly financial support to:
- Senior citizens with limited income and resources
- Individuals with qualifying disabilities
- Eligible children with disabilities
Maximum SSI Payments for 2026
For the year 2026, the maximum federal SSI payments are as follows:
- $994 for individuals
- $1,491 for couples
- $498 for essential persons
This year has already seen multiple early SSI payments due to the first of the month falling on weekends or holidays:
- January 2026 payment was issued on December 31, 2025, due to New Year's Day.
- February payments were sent on January 30, as February 1 was a Sunday.
- March payments were distributed on February 27, since March 1 was also a Sunday.
- August payments are scheduled for July 31, as August 1 is a Saturday.
Later in the year, beneficiaries can expect to receive two SSI payments in both October and December, with the latter serving as advance payments for November 2026 and January 2027.
Social Security Retirement Payment Schedule for August
| Receiving benefits before May 1997 or also receiving SSI | August 3 |
| Birth date between 1st and 10th | August 12 |
| Birth date between 11th and 20th | August 19 |
| Birth date between 21st and 31st | August 26 |
The schedule for retirement and other Social Security benefits remains unchanged. The SSA is actively transitioning beneficiaries from paper checks to electronic payments, including direct deposits and prepaid debit cards. Most recipients already receive their benefits electronically, while those still using paper checks are encouraged to switch via the SSA website, their financial institution, or the Direct Express prepaid debit card program. The agency aims to finalize this transition to electronic payments by 2026.
