In a video shared on X, Sharmila celebrated her victory alongside fellow para-athlete Shilpa Shyla, proudly waving the national flag after India achieved its first double podium finish at the Glasgow Games. Sharmila delivered an impressive season-best throw of 9.81 meters to secure the gold medal, finishing well ahead of Ghana's Zinabu Issah, who earned the silver with a throw of 8.65 meters. The event became particularly memorable for India as Shilpa Shyla was elevated from fourth place to bronze following the disqualification of Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi, marking India's first double podium finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Sharmila's triumph brought India's gold medal tally to two at the Games, contributing to a successful day for the Indian team in Glasgow. The 40-year-old para-athlete from Haryana has seen a remarkable ascent in her career since starting athletics at 34, eventually becoming the national champion in 2021 and now achieving gold at the Commonwealth Games.

India's performance in Glasgow has gained momentum, with the nation securing a total of 10 medals thus far, which includes two gold, five silver, and three bronze medals.
