Marcus Rashford has been warned that he will need to make an "almighty statement" to Manchester United fans and staff if he wants any real chance of rebuilding his career at Old Trafford. After spending the last 18 months away from the club on loan, the England international is set to come back to a squad that has moved on without him under Michael Carrick's leadership.

Proving loyalty to Carrick

After loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, the 28-year-old now finds himself at a turning point. Rashford's commitment was openly questioned in the first half of the 2024-25 season when he said he wanted a fresh challenge away from Manchester. talkSPORT host Hugh Woozencroft repeated those concerns, saying: "Rashford said he wanted a new challenge and unless you can be 100 per cent sure he is completely committed to Man United… he's shown he wasn't fully committed the last time he was at the club… how can you be sure he's going to be this time around?"

Former England international Micky Gray feels the forward must explain the circumstances behind his exit and show his commitment to the club's new era if he genuinely wants another chance. "There's a few things here, The most important one is, if Rashford has a future at Man United, he has to do an almighty statement of why he wants to be at Man United and what the reasons were to leave the club in the first place. I think that's a priority that he has to do," Gray told talkSPORT .

Falling down the Old Trafford pecking order

Although Rashford had a productive season in Spain, scoring 14 goals for a Barcelona side that won the La Liga title, he will soon return to a United squad that has changed considerably.

Gray warned that the academy product must be ready for a lesser role if he stays, saying: "If he does stay then he's got to get used to being a bit-part player. He's not first on the list; he's not going to be playing every week.. [Bryan] Mbuemo, [Matheus] Cunha, [Benjamin] Sesko, Amad to name a few. They've caught up to and if not surpassed Rashford."

Gray added that the physical demands of the English game will also be a major test for the winger after his spell in Catalunya, saying: "Spain is not England .He did very well, but he can play at Barcelona at a different level to what he can at Man United. He can't deny that the Premier League is 100mph – he's going to have to get himself super fit in pre-season."

International form vs domestic expectations

Even with the uncertainty over his club future, Rashford continues to be a regular part of the England setup, having helped the Three Lions finish third at the 2026 World Cup. He played in six of England's eight matches in the tournament and scored in the 4-2 win over Croatia, once again showing his quality on the biggest stage.

But Gray pointed out: "We saw the good and the bad of Rashford for England at the World Cup. Can Man United utilise him in a way they can expect to see the good side and not the bad side? If they do that and he stays, Rashford has got to expect that he isn't going to play every game."

Potential swap deal involving Kone

While plans for a reintegration are being discussed, United officials are also looking at more direct options for Rashford's future. The club are understood to be interested in Roma midfielder Manu Kone but are reluctant to match the Italian club's full €60m valuation.

United have also considered a swap deal involving Rashford to close the gap. Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini is believed to admire the Englishman's technical ability, though any possible move is complicated by the player's heavy wage demands.

Rashford currently earns around €11m net per season, a figure that is well beyond Roma's financial limits.
