Bruno Guimaraes’ future is shaping up to be one of the biggest stories of the current summer transfer window, with Newcastle United determined to keep hold of their captain.

The Brazil midfielder has attracted transfer interest from Arsenal, with reports saying the Premier League champions are preparing an offer for the Brazil international.

Now that the World Cup is over and players are back at their clubs for pre-season, all sides are expected to work towards a resolution, and that appears to be the position from Guimaraes’ side as well.

Arsenal’s interest in the 28-year-old has been widely reported in recent weeks, with the BBC stating that the Gunners were ready to table a £70million bid for the midfielder, and the player himself is said to be open to the move.

Newcastle are unwilling to lose their key man after already seeing Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leave for Barcelona and Tottenham respectively this summer, and the player is now reportedly issuing an ultimatum.

According to TEAMtalk, Guimaraes has told his representatives to sort out his future ‘within the next week’ before he is due back at Newcastle for pre-season training.

Guimaraes is scheduled to return to the Magpies for a pre-season training camp in Spain after an extended break following his World Cup campaign with Brazil, where he featured in all five of the Selecao’s matches on the way to the round of 16, where they lost to Norway, and he contributed four assists along the way.

The Magpies face Bristol City on Wednesday, before travelling to Spain for a warm-weather training camp and a friendly against Valencia, with the report adding that the midfielder wants clarity before he rejoins the squad.

Although reports indicate that the former Lyon player is keen to join Arsenal, the main hurdle in any possible deal will be the two clubs’ valuation of the 48-time Brazil international.

After Tonali left the club for £100million, Eddie Howe is said to feel that his skipper belongs in the same price range, while this latest report also says that Guimaraes has no plan to refuse to turn up for duty in an attempt to force a transfer.

Instead, his representatives are now trying to push Arsenal to increase their interest and put forward an offer that Newcastle simply cannot reject.

In FourFourTwo’s view, Guimaraes, who is valued at €85million by Transfermarkt, is right to make sure this matter is settled and that speculation does not hang over his pre-season preparations.
