Sedan Car Sales: In the last few years, the dominance of SUVs has continuously increased in the Indian auto market due to which it was believed that the era of hatchback cars is now coming to an end. But sales figures for June 2026 have changed this perception. Let us tell you that affordable hatchback cars have once again made a great comeback and the biggest surprise has been given by Maruti Suzuki Alto. Due to low price, better mileage and easy maintenance, there has been a huge jump in the sales of Alto.

Sales of hatchback cars increased again

It has been seen that a total of 79,419 units of 16 major hatchback models were sold in India in June 2026, which is about 17 percent more than in June last year. But the sales were slightly lower compared to May 2026, yet this segment appeared to be strengthening on an annual basis. Whereas in Q2 2026, an increase of about 24 percent was recorded in the sales of hatchback cars. Auto experts believe that first-time car buyers are still giving preference to small and budget-friendly cars. The demand for affordable cars remains constant, especially in small cities and towns.

Alto did wonders, WagonR became number-1

It has been seen in the information that 10,388 units of Maruti Suzuki Alto were sold in June 2026, which is about 106 percent more than last year. In the second quarter also, Alto sales almost doubled. This indicates that the demand for reliable and mileage efficient cars in low budget is still strong.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR retained its number-1 position in the hatchback segment. Its 16,952 units were sold in June and an increase of more than 31 percent was recorded in sales on an annual basis. After this, Maruti Swift stood second with sales of 15,215 units.

Sales of some cars increased

Maruti Baleno sales also increased by about 39 percent to 12,488 units. Tata Tiago, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Toyota Glanza also performed positively. But the picture was different in the premium hatchback segment. There was a decline of about 39 percent in Tata Altroz sales and about 52 percent decline in Hyundai i20 sales. It is clear from this that customers are now giving more importance to price, mileage and value for money than features.

Maruti Suzuki’s dominance continues

Maruti Suzuki’s dominance continued at the brand level. The company sold 57,332 units in the hatchback segment in June 2026 and achieved about 72 percent market share. Low price, easy maintenance, better finance options and increasing demand in small cities are considered to be the main reasons behind the success of Alto.

Finally, let us tell you that the figures of June 2026 prove that even though the popularity of SUVs is continuously increasing in the Indian market, hatchback cars still remain the first choice for customers who give priority to budget and mileage. Alto’s spectacular comeback is the biggest example of this changing trend.
