Sensex Holds Above 76,800 While Nifty Stays Near 24,000; Fed Policy, Q1 Earnings and Global Cues Keep Investors Cautious

Indian equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 traded in a narrow range on Tuesday, July 28, surrendering most of their early gains as investors adopted a cautious approach ahead of key global and domestic developments. Although easing crude oil prices provided initial support to the markets, uncertainty surrounding the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy decision, mixed global cues and continued foreign institutional selling limited further gains.

At around 10:45 AM, the BSE Sensex was trading 45.67 points higher at 76,881.45, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 24.60 points to trade at 24,020.55. The benchmark indices remained largely flat after opening on a positive note, reflecting investors’ wait-and-watch strategy amid a busy earnings season and global economic uncertainty.

Market participants are now closely monitoring quarterly corporate earnings, global central bank decisions and geopolitical developments for fresh direction.

Sensex and Nifty Give Up Early Gains

Indian markets opened in positive territory, extending Monday’s recovery after snapping a five-session losing streak.

However, buying momentum weakened during the morning session as investors preferred to book profits and await fresh triggers before taking aggressive positions.

The Sensex continued to trade above the psychologically important 76,800 level, while the Nifty managed to remain above 24,000, indicating resilience despite cautious market sentiment.

Analysts believe the absence of strong domestic triggers kept benchmark indices confined to a narrow trading range.

Falling Crude Oil Prices Support Market Sentiment

One of the key factors supporting Indian equities was the sharp decline in global crude oil prices.

Lower crude prices are generally considered positive for India, which imports a significant portion of its energy requirements.

A decline in oil prices helps reduce inflationary pressure, improves the country’s trade balance and lowers input costs for several industries.

The easing in crude prices followed signs of de-escalation in geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, reducing fears of supply disruptions in global energy markets.

Investors Await US Federal Reserve Decision

Despite favourable crude prices, investor sentiment remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy announcement.

Global markets are closely watching the central bank’s stance on interest rates and inflation, as any indication regarding future rate hikes could significantly influence capital flows into emerging markets, including India.

Higher US interest rates generally strengthen the dollar and may lead foreign investors to reduce exposure to riskier emerging market assets.

The Fed’s decision is expected to be one of the biggest market-moving events of the week.

Mixed Global Cues Limit Buying

Asian equity markets traded with a mixed to negative bias on Tuesday, restricting gains in Indian markets.

Technology stocks remained under pressure following a global semiconductor sell-off, with major indices in Japan and South Korea witnessing declines.

Investors are increasingly assessing the impact of rising competition from Chinese technology companies and the sustainability of the global artificial intelligence investment boom.

The mixed global environment kept risk appetite subdued across Asian equity markets.

Foreign Investors Continue to Sell

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in Indian equities, continuing the trend seen over recent sessions.

However, sustained buying by Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) helped offset a significant portion of the selling pressure and prevented a sharper correction in benchmark indices.

Market experts believe domestic institutional support has played a crucial role in maintaining market stability despite global uncertainty.

The divergence between foreign and domestic investment flows continues to shape market movements.

Q1 Earnings Season in Focus

Corporate earnings remain one of the primary drivers of stock-specific action.

Investors are closely tracking quarterly results from several major companies, including Bharat Electronics, Tata Power, Coal India and IndiGo, as earnings are expected to influence sectoral performance.

Strong financial results could provide fresh momentum to individual stocks even if the broader market remains range-bound.

Analysts expect earnings guidance and management commentary to play an equally important role in determining investor sentiment.

Nykaa Strengthens Quick Commerce Business

Among major corporate developments, Nykaa announced the appointment of Ankit Jain to head its quick-commerce business, NYKAA NOW.

The company said the move is aimed at strengthening its supply chain and fulfilment capabilities while expanding its 30–60-minute delivery network across major Indian cities.

Ankit Jain brings over two decades of experience, having previously held leadership positions at Unilever, Flipkart and Swiggy Instamart.

The appointment reflects Nykaa’s continued focus on improving operational efficiency and expanding its quick-commerce business.

Corporate Actions and IPO Activity

Tuesday also witnessed several important corporate actions across the market.

A number of listed companies, including Godrej Properties, SRF, Solar Industries, Dollar Industries, Greaves Cotton and EIH Hotels, announced dividend-related developments.

Meanwhile, investors are preparing for upcoming public issues, with Manipal Health Enterprises, Juniper Green Energy and MV Electrosystems scheduled to launch their Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) over the coming days.

Corporate actions and IPO activity are expected to keep primary market interest elevated during the week.

Gold Rises as Crude Oil Falls

Commodity markets also reflected changing global sentiment.

Gold prices edged higher as falling US Treasury yields supported demand for the precious metal following the decline in crude oil prices.

Meanwhile, crude oil prices witnessed one of their sharpest recent declines after the United States and Iran paused military hostilities and renewed diplomatic engagement.

However, analysts cautioned that both countries remain prepared to resume military action if negotiations fail, keeping geopolitical risks alive.

Markets Await Fresh Direction

With benchmark indices trading near record levels, investors are expected to remain cautious until clearer signals emerge from global central banks, corporate earnings and geopolitical developments.

Lower crude oil prices have provided short-term relief, but concerns over interest rates, foreign fund outflows and global market volatility continue to influence sentiment.

The remainder of the week is likely to be driven by the outcome of the US Federal Reserve meeting, quarterly earnings announcements and developments in global commodity markets.

Until then, Indian equities are expected to remain range-bound as investors wait for fresh catalysts.
