A woman was allegedly strangled to death in front of her children after refusing to elope with her lover. Police said the suspect remains at large and officers are continuing to work to track him down.

It's reported the victim broke off her affair with her neighbour and refused to elope with him. He became enraged and allegedly strangled her to death in front of her son and daughter. He then reportedly staged the scene to appear as a suicide before fleeing. He remains on the run from police and officers have launched an urgent manhunt in a bid to track him down.

As reported by The Times of India, the woman, identified as 31-year-old Rizwana, was killed in the city of Ghaziabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh. She was living with her husband, Nisar, and their son, eight-year-old Ahada, and daughter, six-year-old Nida.

Meanwhile, the suspect, identified locally as Faizan, was living on a floor above them. It's reported Rizwana was having an affair with him for around six months but refused to leave her husband and broke off the relationship.

Faizan is said to have moved out of the building on July 7 after Nisar told him to leave and never return. Nisar explained: "While leaving, he threatened me. He said if my wife would not be his, she would be no one's."

However, while Nisar was away from home on Saturday (July 25), Faizan allegedly returned and strangled Rizwana. Another neighbour called Nisar at around 11.30am to tell him something had happened to his wife.

He rushed home to find her unconscious before she was rushed to hospital. However, she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving and an investigation was launched.

Ahad, who is blind, told his father that Rizwana was murdered by Faizan. Meanwhile, doctors confirmed that she was most likely strangled to death.

Police have now launched an investigation in a bid to track down the suspect. Surendra Nath Tiwari, a local officer, said: "We suspect that Faizan came to meet Rizwana and tried to force the victim to run away with him, but she refused, leading to the incident."
