On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Indian athletes Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, and Sharmila Dhankar for their remarkable performances at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow.

Recognition for Sarvesh Kushare

In a post on X, PM Modi commended Sarvesh Kushare for clinching a silver medal in the men's high jump, highlighting his unwavering determination and consistency. He stated, "A spectacular Silver for Sarvesh Kushare in Men's High Jump at #CWG2026! His determination and consistency have been noteworthy. Congratulations to him on this outstanding achievement. India is proud of him. Wishing him many more successes ahead."

Valluri Ajaya Babu's Achievement

The Prime Minister also recognized Valluri Ajaya Babu for earning a silver medal in the men's 79kg weightlifting category, noting that he set a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch event. PM Modi expressed, "More glory for India in Weightlifting! Delighted that Valluri Ajaya Babu brings home the Silver Medal in the Men's 79 kg category at the Glasgow Games. He has also etched his name in the record books by setting a CWG Record in the Snatch event. Congratulations to him and all the best for his endeavours ahead."

Historic Win for Sharmila Dhankar

Sharmila Dhankar was also congratulated by PM Modi for her gold medal in the women's shot put F57 event, marking a historic moment as it ended India's two-decade wait for a para athletics gold at the Commonwealth Games. He remarked, "History has been created in Glasgow! Congratulations to Sharmila for a very special Gold in the Women's Shot Put F57 event and also for a season-best throw. This remarkable performance ends a two-decade long wait for a Para Athletics Gold at the Commonwealth Games. My best wishes for the endeavours ahead."

India's Impressive Day 5 at the Games

India showcased a strong performance on Day 5 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, securing four medals and raising its total to 10. The highlight was Sharmila Dhankar's gold, making her the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games gold in para athletics. Additionally, Shilpa K. Shyla's bronze was upgraded following a Nigerian athlete's disqualification, resulting in a double podium finish for India.

Athletic Achievements

In athletics, Sarvesh Kushare's silver in the men's high jump was complemented by Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Satyanathan qualifying for the long jump finals. Weightlifting contributed three more medals, with Gyaneshwari Yadav winning silver, Bindyarani Devi taking bronze, and Valluri Ajaya Babu securing silver. Progress was also made in boxing and swimming, with several athletes advancing to the next rounds, while Sajan Prakash and Swatik Patil reached the swimming finals. However, Tejas Shirse, Sumit Kundu, and others exited their events.

Current Medal Tally for India

So far, India's medal tally includes golds from Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila Dhankar, alongside five silver and three bronze medals across weightlifting, athletics, and para powerlifting.
