However, did you know that selecting specific options during booking can boost your chances of securing a lower berth?

Do this while booking your ticket

When booking a train ticket, there is an option to select a berth alongside the passenger's name.
If you want a lower berth, go to the 'Berth Preference' section while entering passenger details and select the 'Lower Berth' option.

Will you definitely get a lower berth?

Selecting the lower berth option in the preference section does not guarantee you will get one every time. The railway reservation system allocates berths based on seat availability. However, the railways do try to assign a lower seat to passengers who have specifically requested it during booking. That said, if all lower berths are already occupied, you might still be allotted a middle or upper berth despite your preference.

Can you get a lower berth even after the ticket is booked?

If your ticket is booked but you have been allotted a middle or upper berth, knowing a few key details can help you switch to a lower berth, even after the journey has begun. If the chart has been prepared or the train has already departed and you still want a lower berth, you can speak to the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) on board. If a lower berth becomes vacant for any reason, the TTE can reassign that seat to you.

If you are booking tickets online, select the option "Book only if at least one lower berth is allotted" at the time of booking. However, please note that your ticket will be confirmed only if a lower berth is available on the train; if no lower berth is available, the ticket will not be booked.
