Southern Railway has given priority to the transportation of fertilizer for the Kharif season. Between April and June 2026-27, 13.7 lakh tonnes of fertilizer was loaded, which is 7% more than last year. Railways said there are enough rakes available to meet the demand and there is no shortage.
New Delhi [भारत]July 28 (ANI): Southern Railway has given top priority to transportation of fertilizers in view of the needs of farmers during the Kharif sowing season.
During the first quarter of the current financial year, i.e. April to June 2026-27, Southern Railway loaded 13.7 lakh tonnes of fertilizers. According to a Southern Railway press release, this represents an increase of 7 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the previous financial year 2025-26, and reflects the Railways' continued ability to deliver fertilizers to the hinterland in sync with the progress of the sowing season.

There has been no problem regarding availability of railway rakes for fertilizer transportation in its jurisdiction. The release said all ports served by Southern Railway -- including New Mangalore Port, Chennai Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Tuticorin - Rakes have been and are being supplied on time and as and when demanded by the port authorities and fertilizer companies.
Special steps taken for supply
Every indent placed by the consignees has been fulfilled promptly, and no indent for fertilizer transportation is pending due to non-availability of rakes. The release said these measures have been possible through continuous coordination between Southern Railways, port authorities and fertilizer companies, so that rake needs can be anticipated and planned even before the arrival of ships.
Round the clock monitoring of fertilizer indents is being done at divisional and headquarters levels, with priority given to rakes for fertilizers during the Kharif season. Loading and unloading operations at port sidings and freight terminals are being given constant attention to ensure quick turnaround of wagons. Southern Railway will continue to provide every rake required for the purpose of transportation of fertilizers. Port authorities, fertilizer companies and other stakeholders are assured that adequate railway rakes are ready to meet their needs during the Kharif season and beyond, the release said. (ANI)
