New Delhi: The Bank of Baroda (BoB) has confirmed the cybersecurity breach that resulted in exposure of the data of customers, after the compromise of an email account of an employee of the bank. While the core banking infrastructure of the bank is still secure.

Is your bank account at risk?

As per Bank of Baroda, the data breach has not compromised the core banking infrastructure of the bank, implying that all the normal banking activities are still safe. However, if any of your personal information is already compromised, then there may be chances that the criminals may use it for identity theft, phishing other similar purpose. Changing the password for net banking and ATM PIN is recommended.

How to find out whether you are among the affected ones?

So far, the bank has not provided the list of affected customers by branch. However, cybersecurity experts have developed tools through which customers can find out about the branch that may be affected by using the IFSC code of the branch.”

What kind of information might have been leaked?

As per the reports, the data may contain names, addresses, Aadhaar numbers, mobile numbers, account- papers, loan papers, and banking papers. It is not yet known whether the passwords, PIN for debit cards, and one-time passwords (OTPs) were leaked.

What are the possible threats?

If any of the personal information was leaked, cybercriminals can make use of this information to run a phishing scam or make an attempt identity theft. In case there is any similarity in other accounts also, the risk of getting into a scam increases.

What are you supposed to do now?

Users need to change their passwords for net banking and mobile banking immediately, along with changing the PIN numbers for debit services if they are worried about the same. You should never disclose any kind of one-time password (OTPs), passwords and banking- information through calls, emails, and messages, even if the person on the other end is claiming to be from the bank.

It is a very serious situation, but as of now, there is no report that the money of the customers has been compromised because of this issue.
