Priya Ghanghas Advances to Semifinals

Glasgow [Scotland], July 29: Indian boxer Priya Ghanghas is determined to clinch the gold medal after successfully reaching the semifinals in the women's 60kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. She attributed her success in overcoming a challenging quarterfinal match to her confidence in her training.

Following her win against Scotland's Niamh Mitchell, Priya expressed, "My focus is solely on the gold. It was a tightly contested match, but I had complete trust in my preparation."

The reigning Asian champion showcased her resilience by bouncing back to defeat the Scottish competitor, ensuring herself at least a bronze medal, as all semifinal losers in Commonwealth Games boxing are guaranteed a podium finish.

Facing a supportive home crowd, Priya had a rocky start, with Mitchell taking the first round 4-1 by effectively utilizing her movement and southpaw stance to pressure the Indian boxer.

However, Priya responded strongly in the second round, ramping up her attacks and applying consistent pressure, which allowed her to equalize the match by winning the round 4-1.

With the momentum shifting in her favor, Priya dominated the final round, showcasing superior technique and cleaner punches, ultimately earning a unanimous decision from the judges to secure a remarkable comeback and keep her gold medal dreams alive.

Priya's victory was part of a successful day for India's boxing team in Glasgow. Preeti Pawar also advanced to the women's 54kg semifinals with a decisive 5-0 win over Northern Ireland's Nicole Clyde, ensuring herself at least a bronze medal.

In the men's 55kg category, Mandengbam Jadumani Singh triumphed over Zambia's Mwale in the quarterfinals, adding another guaranteed medal for India and highlighting a stellar day for the nation's boxers.

India has maintained a strong performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, excelling in boxing, weightlifting, and athletics. The country has amassed a total of 12 medals so far—two gold, seven silver, and three bronze—and is assured of at least three more medals from boxing with Priya, Preeti, and Jadumani qualifying for the semifinals.
