Confusion and the Labib board are inseparable!

Zamalek left their supporters confused for several minutes on Tuesday evening. The club’s official “Zamalkawy” app announced that sporting director John Edward’s association with the club had come to an end, but the news and its notification disappeared soon after. No official clarification was issued.

The app had reported John Edward’s resignation from his role, and users received a notification with the same message. Then the story vanished. That reversal raised major questions among supporters about the real status of the sporting director’s future.

The news disappeared from the app, but the official page’s Facebook post remained in place under the headline “John Edward’s journey with Zamalek comes to an end”. That only added to the confusion around the decision: had it been reversed, or had it been published before the official procedures were complete?

Minutes later, the “Zamalkawy” app returned to confirm the news again. It published a report under the same headline, “John Edward’s journey with Zamalek comes to an end”, saying that the sporting director had ended his spell with the club after a season in which the team were crowned Egyptian Premier League champions. Zamalek are now preparing for the new campaign and a return to the CAF Champions League, after securing the African licence and settling a number of pending cases.

Neither Zamalek’s board of directors, chaired by Hussein Labib, nor any of the club’s platform officials issued any statement explaining why the news was removed the first time, or why the final confirmation was delayed.

All of this is taking place amid a growing crisis between the club president and the sporting director. Press reports revealed that a meeting lasting around five hours between the two ended without agreement on the football team’s key files, most notably the identity of the new head coach.

John Edward insisted on completing the signing of Serbian coach Vuk Rasovic. Labib had reservations about the deal, preferring to keep Moatamed Gamal in the technical role because of doubts over the Serbian coach’s CV and the high cost of bringing him in.

Disputes on every front: a season at stake

The disagreement between the two sides also extended to the issue of setting up the football company. The club president rejected pressure to approve proposals that would give investors larger shares, insisting that the board of directors should retain the biggest stake in the company.

These administrative disagreements came at the same time as a deepening financial crisis at the club. Successive Egyptian reports said that John Edward had warned Hussein Labib that the team could face a major crisis in the new season because of a shortage of liquidity needed to pay the dues of the players, the technical staff and the new coach.

He also warned against a repeat of situations involving instability and contract terminations, giving the board of directors a two-week deadline to solve the financial crisis.

Put together, these technical and financial disputes give the episode of publishing the departure news, then deleting it, then restoring it, a broader meaning than a simple “technical error”. It appears more like a sign of the deeper administrative confusion that the White Castle has lived with for years, while the future of the club and the football team remains clouded by uncertainty.
