Speaking at Bayern Munich’s training camp at Tegernsee, the legendary German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has strongly indicated that the upcoming 2026/27 Bundesliga season could be his last. As is often the case with footballers, Neuer still kept the possibility of a change of mind open. The 40-year-old said his announcement should be taken with the proverbial “grain of salt”.
Neuer had repeatedly played down speculation about a return to the national team for the World Cup this summer, only to eventually accept Julian Nagelsmann’s invitation to put his boots on once more. Neuer has already retired from the German national team twice. Today was the first time he gave a clear sign that he may bring his club career to an end as well.
The 40-year-old returned to Bayern Munich’s pre-season training after Germany’s World Cup exit and is now preparing for his 21st Bundesliga campaign. Neuer admitted that the disappointment of the national team’s tournament exit was still hard to digest, but he welcomed the chance to turn his attention to fresh goals with Bayern.
The experienced goalkeeper remains convinced that Vincent Kompany’s side has the quality to challenge for every trophy on offer. Neuer also said he was pleased with Bayern’s summer signings and pointed out that the club had not lost any irreplaceable players from last season’s starting XI. Neuer added that Bayern’s current atmosphere persuaded him to keep playing for one more year.
“I might have stopped in 85 percent of cases,” Neuer said. “But with this team, the staff and the coaching team, it’s simply fun. We always have the opportunity to compete for every title. [After this season], it looks very much like I’ll stop.”
Neuer expects his partnership with Jonas Urbig to continue in a similar way to last season. The captain emphasised that Bayern’s goalkeepers, including Sven Ulreich and the club’s younger prospects, would keep backing and pushing one another.
“The important thing is that we help each other and push each other,” Neuer said, “so that we can always give the team the best possible performance in goal.”
