New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has suspended the food licence of Park Plaza in Delhi’s Shahdara with immediate effect after an inspection found several serious violations.

The food safety regulator said the violations raised concerns over the establishment’s compliance with mandatory safety and hygiene standards. Inspectors found pests inside a food preparation area and detected expired food products stored at the premises.

According to the FSSAI, tomatoes and beetroot kept at the facility had visible fungal growth. Inspectors also found spoiled lemons stored for use in food preparation. “Live pest found: A live earworm was found inside the food preparation area,” the FSSAI said in a social media post.

The regulator also found “expired food stock” at the facility. It said around 63.60 kg of expired food products meant for food preparation had been kept in storage.

Inspectors found heavily deteriorated and dark black cooking oil that staff allegedly used to fry food. The FSSAI declared the oil unfit for consumption. The inspection also found a heavy pest infestation that included flies and cockroaches.

The regulator reported water leakage inside walk-in chillers. It also found stagnant water on the premises due to damaged floor tiles.

The FSSAI found no proper separation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food products, ingredients and utensils. The regulator said this lack of segregation created a risk of cross-contamination during food storage and preparation.

Inspectors also raised concerns about the handling of drinking water bottles. The regulator claimed that the bottles were “refilled without proper washing or sanitisation.” The FSSAI suspended the establishment’s licence with immediate effect because of the multiple critical violations found during the inspection.
