Filmmaker Aanand L Raihas finally addressed why his name is missing from the credits of Tumbbad 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2018 cult horror hit he originally produced. In a new interview, Anand L Rai clarified that his absence from the project, now backed by Sohum Shah with Alia Bhattand Nawazuddin Siddiqui on board, comes down entirely to a creative decision rather than any conflict, even as he continues celebrating a recent National Award win for his latest documentary work.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Anand L Rai was asked directly about his absence from the sequel. He said the decision was purely creative and came down to wanting full freedom while making something new. In his words, Tumbbad had already told its story so beautifully that he personally didn’t feel the need to take it any further. He was quick to add that he genuinely wishes the new team well and believes they’ll make a great film, but said the choice of which projects to join has to stay entirely his own.
Tumbbad didn’t do much business when it first released in 2018, but it slowly built a massive fan following over the years, especially after a successful re-release last year. Following that response, actor-producer Sohum Shah announced a sequel and brought Alia Bhatt on board for the project, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui also joining the cast. The film is currently eyeing a December 3, 2027 release.
The filmmaker is currently celebrating a National Award win for his documentary Statue Of Unity: Ekta Ka Prateek, which won Best Director in the non-feature film category. Talking about the honour, Rai said awards don’t change how he approaches his craft, but admitted they do give him a sense of validation, describing it as a reminder that his work and existence genuinely matter.
