Team India is kinda going through a gradual shifting in its coaching staff, and it’s not just one name. Fielding coach T Dilip, he recently completed his tenure and will not be travelling with the team for the next month’s Test series in Sri Lanka. Also, former Netherlands cricketer Ryan ten Doeschate has stepped down as India’s assistant coach. And he had already hinted at that choice during the white-ball tour of England earlier this month.

In the meantime, some reports have been floating around, saying fast bowling coach Morne Morkel could become the next member of the setup to step away. But here’s the actual story behind those claims, and whether Morkel is really planning an exit from Team India.

As per a report by the Times of India, Morne Morkel will continue as India’s fast bowling coach. The former South Africa pacer has decided to remain with the national team, and he’s hoping the senior players will gain from his experience, going into the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup.

The 50-over World Cup next year is said to be jointly staged by South Africa , Zimbabwe and Namibia, like all at once. The 41-year-old, after having played for South Africa, now feels that his familiarity with the surroundings can really get through to India’s standout players , helping them gear up for the tournament. In his view, this period of experience should do a lot for India’s quick bowlers , and at the same time it should also assist the senior batters in managing the speed and the extra bounce they’re very likely to see in South African venues. The TOI write up also mentioned that as Morkel remains in place, there aren’t expected to be more adjustments in Team India’s coaching team for now .

T Dilip, meanwhile , served as India’s fielding coach during the team’s successful 2024 T20 World Cup, and also the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy run. He even had the same responsibility when India won the 2026 T20 World Cup earlier this year.

Still, the BCCI has reportedly decided to part ways with him, because India’s catching and overall fielding levels dipped noticeably in recent matches, and in bilateral series as well. In the white-ball swing across England, the Men in Blue sort of dropped 11 catches. They even missed another 10 catches in the three match T20I series vs Zimbabwe earlier this month, not great at all.

Ryan ten Doeschate has also resigned from his assistant coach position for personal reasons. The ex Netherlands international said he wants to spend more time with his family, because Team India’s hectic travel schedule kind of left him with almost nothing in the way of personal time.

Now, he is expected to slot back into the Kolkata Knight Riders setup, but in a fresh coaching role. That role is viewed as less demanding than an international assignment, so it fits the plan, kinda. Next month Team India will tour Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series. Reports say the BCCI has already appointed Subhadeep Ghosh as the new fielding coach to replace T Dilip ahead of the tour, with things moving quickly.

The board is also expected to announce who takes over for Ryan ten Doeschate in the coming days. All in all, the Sri Lanka trip should signal the start of a refreshed coaching framework for Team India, even if Morne Morkel has opted to stay on as the side’s fast bowling coach.
