New Delhi: In a move that could create yet another row in the region, Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has justified the actions of the government amid the recent protests against the policies of the Islamabad administration in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). According to Asif, the protesters against Islamabad’s policy were considered the same as India.
His statement comes after security agencies opened fire during a protest march organized by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), resulting in the deaths of at least 14 activists, according to the organization. This is considered one of the bloodiest suppressions in the region in recent years.
Asif Rejected Talks With Protestors
Commenting on the situation, Asif pointed out that the protesters would be treated as Pakistan’s adversaries and rejected any possibility of dialogue with them. This statement from the Pakistani minister has drawn strong criticism from the political opponents and rights groups.
Previously known for making controversial statements, Asif justified the action taken by the security forces and argued that they responded to the threat posed by the armed protesters.
Dispute Over Causes of Violent Incidents
According to JAAC, over two thousand supporters were marching peacefully when the security forces shot at them “without provocation”. The group said more than two dozen were injured besides the deaths.
On the other hand, the government of Pakistan gave a different account of the story saying that some protesters were armed and had attacked the security force before its action. There is no way of determining which story is true at the moment.
Causes of Unrest
The unrest has persisted in the region for weeks. The protests have been centered on the demands for political reforms, reduced cost of electricity and essentials, and administrative accountability.
The recent violence took place during the elections to the region’s legislative assembly that India says are aimed at giving legitimacy to Pakistan’s rule in the region.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including those parts controlled by Pakistan, belong to India.
