Kolkata, July 29: On Wednesday, the West Bengal Police announced the successful recovery of a substantial amount of smuggled explosives, including ammonium nitrate and gelatin sticks, from Nalhati in the Birbhum district after an extensive overnight operation.

Authorities received a tip-off regarding the storage of large quantities of explosives at a residence in Lakhnamara village, known for its stone quarrying activities. The police initiated their operation late Tuesday night.

Upon searching the premises, officers were surprised by the volume of explosives found, prompting an investigation into the possibility of an organized smuggling operation.

“We are looking into whether these explosives were intended for local quarry operations or if there was a plan for sabotage,” stated an officer involved in the investigation.

The search continued throughout the night, leading to the discovery of the explosives concealed in the backyard of the property. In total, authorities recovered 800 kilograms of ammonium nitrate and 12,400 gelatin sticks.

Additionally, 105 detonators and 36 coils of detonating fuse were also seized. Police confirmed that various other items associated with explosive usage were found.

Upon receiving the alert, bomb squad personnel arrived at the scene, and the area was secured to ensure public safety.

The confiscated explosives underwent examination before being secured by the authorities.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the house from which the explosives were retrieved had recently been rented out. Efforts are underway to locate the tenant, who is currently missing, while the property owner is being interrogated.

The police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the origins, supply chain, and potential applications of the explosives. The Birbhum District Police have announced that such operations will persist as part of their commitment to a 'zero tolerance for crime' policy aimed at curbing criminal activities and ensuring public safety.

Just last week, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had also uncovered a significant stash of explosives, including 20 bags of ammonium nitrate and several detonators, during a raid in the same Nalhati region, leading to the arrest of a suspect.
