DFB sporting director Rudi Voller highlighted clear differences between Julian Nagelsmann and his successor Jurgen Klopp after the former Liverpool manager was appointed as the new Germany head coach. Speaking in Mainz, Voller said Klopp would be much more visible at matches, while also hinting that Nagelsmann had been “too sensitive” to the heavy public criticism.

Voller assesses Nagelsmann departure

Voller looked back at the circumstances behind Nagelsmann’s exit, which came amid intense public pressure and sharp media criticism after Germany’s shock World Cup round of 32 defeat to Paraguay. The DFB sporting director suggested that Nagelsmann eventually lost his ability to motivate the squad. Voller also said the former head coach’s sensitivity to public scrutiny and outside accusations made his position increasingly impossible to sustain.

Executive critiques former manager

Speaking at the International Coaches' Congress in Mainz, Voller reflected on why Nagelsmann ultimately lost control of the national side.

As quoted by Kicker, Voller admitted that while Nagelsmann struggled with stadium presence and influence over the team, the intense media scrutiny played a major part in his downfall. Voller said: “Jurgen will certainly be in the stadiums more often; that was never really Julian’s thing. But that is not why Jonathan Tah missed the penalty against Paraguay. In the end, Julian simply no longer had the support to inspire people. Maybe he was a little too sensitive at times, but who isn’t as a coach?

“No matter what decision he made, it was taken negatively. If he criticised players, he was criticised for that. If he protected players, he was criticised for that too. At times, it was too harsh and simply unfair. To be honest, I underestimated that for a long time; that was my big mistake. I then tried to step in with the media from time to time during the World Cup.

“That is just the fate of a coach in professional football. In the end, you are judged by the raw results, and those were disappointing. You are also judged by the style of play, which was not good either. Still, I stand by it: Julian is a top character, a top guy who has already had a great coaching career and still has a great one ahead of him. It will not take long before he is back at it.”

Klopp earns managerial authority

Klopp stayed away from making a personal appearance in Mainz, explaining in a video message that he did not want to “generate headlines again right at the start” before speaking about his return to management: “Becoming a coach is not hard. Being a coach, even more so... Now I have become a coach again myself, which was hard enough - and now I have to show that I can remain one. I want to focus fully on that now.”

He also made a light-hearted comment on Voller stepping in as his replacement on stage: “I never thought that would happen either.”

While recognising the pressure that comes from the German public, Voller feels Klopp’s excellent record gives him the freedom to experiment, underlining the DFB’s complete support for the former Liverpool manager: “Even though he is an immensely experienced coach, he is already noticing the huge weight this job carries. It is a completely different level, even compared to top club teams.

“No matter what you decide - 80 million people are always discussing it. Even so, people will turn a blind eye with Jürgen every now and then if something does not work out. He has earned that through his coaching career; you do not get that for free. That is why he has the authority and power to try things out. And in the end, he will choose the players who can carry out his ideas and playing style.”
