BTS fans woke up to an unexpected announcement after the group confirmed that they would not be entering their music for the 2027 Grammy Awards. The decision wasn’t about taking a break from awards. Instead, the members said they were uncomfortable with the Recording Academy’s newly introduced Asian Pop category and wanted their music to be recognised without being separated by region or language. According to the members, they want their music to be appreciated for what it is, without being placed into a separate category based on language or region.

Sharing the announcement with fans, BTS wrote, “We decided not to submit to the Grammys this year.” The group further explained its stand by adding, “We want music to be heard and loved for what it is, rather than categorized by region or language.” Their statement has quickly become one of the most talked-about topics among fans, especially because the group returned to full-fledged activities only recently after completing military service.

The Recording Academy recently introduced an Asian Pop category, a move that has divided opinion online. The announcement has divided opinion online. Some called it overdue recognition for Asian music, while others argued that it creates another separate space instead of encouraging equal competition. Fans also pointed to the reported language rule, saying it left them with more questions than answers. If implemented as expected, English-language songs by Asian artists, including BTS’s global hit Dynamite, may not qualify for the category.

That has left many questioning how artists creating music primarily in English would be evaluated. Several fans also criticised the decision on X. One user wrote that introducing a separate Asian Pop category. At the same time, Asian artists continue to dominate global charts, which feels more like segregation than inclusion. Another argued that artists should be judged under the same standards regardless of their background.

The Recording Academy has not issued any official response to the growing debate so far. Entries for the 69th Grammy Awards remain open until August 21. With BTS choosing not to submit their music, however, the group will not be part of the upcoming Grammy race despite making their highly anticipated return to the global music scene in 2026.
