Congress has strongly criticized the police action on student protest in New Delhi. Priyanka Gandhi expressed concern over the injuries of students. Rahul Gandhi raised questions on the role of Home Minister Amit Shah and called him 'guilty or incompetent'. There was a huge uproar on this issue in the Lok Sabha.
New Delhi [भारत]July 29 (ANI): Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday criticized the police action against protesting students in the national capital. He said the entire country has witnessed the developments and expressed concern over the injuries suffered by the protesters.
Priyanka Gandhi and Praniti Shinde condemned police action
Speaking to reporters after Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day, Priyanka Gandhi condemned the alleged use of force against students and highlighted the injuries sustained during the protests. "The whole country saw what happened. A student lost his eye," he said.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Praniti Shinde raised serious questions over the police action against student protesters in New Delhi. He condemned the physical assault on female protesters and criticized top government ministers for celebrating. Praniti Shinde said, "Injustice has been done to the students of the country, and women were brutally beaten. Who ordered this? When the entire country was mourning at RML Hospital, the Education Minister was being welcomed here. Are the BJP, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister so scared that they cannot face the country?"
Rahul Gandhi surrounded Home Minister Amit Shah
Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was either "guilty or incompetent" for the police action during the July 20 student protests. He stressed that the Home Minister should clarify his role in Parliament. Speaking to reporters after the Lok Sabha adjournment, Rahul Gandhi said there could be only two possible explanations for the crackdown on student protesters at Jantar Mantar on July 20.
Gandhi said, "There can be two possible scenarios. One is that the Home Minister issued the order. The other is that the Home Minister did not know that there would be firing. In the first case, he is guilty; in the second, he is incompetent—there can only be one of these two; there is no third possibility." He further said, "If the Home Minister did not even know that bullets were being fired, it means he is incompetent; otherwise, if he ordered it, he is guilty."
Uproar in Lok Sabha and warning from Speaker
Questioning Amit Shah's absence from the House during the debate, Gandhi said, "He did not even come to Parliament. Why is the so-called brave Home Minister of India not coming? Why is he not in the House? If he did not do anything, did not give any order, then give an explanation that he did not do that." Asserting his right to raise the issue in Parliament, he said, "It is my right to speak in Parliament and they should give me this right."
His remarks came after a heated exchange in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. Gandhi had alleged that the Home Minister did not have the courage to be present in the House, to which the ruling party strongly objected.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju described Gandhi's allegations as "baseless" and accused him of making baseless allegations against a senior minister without evidence. Speaker Om Birla also warned the opposition leader to desist from making personal allegations without factual support.
Earlier, another confrontation was seen in the House when Rijiju objected to an expression used by Gandhi during his speech. Following objections from ruling party members and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Speaker Om Birla ordered deletion of the controversial expression from parliamentary records before adjourning the House amid uproar.
