New Delhi: Delhi’s Jantar Mantar is once again in the headlines. After the demonstration of Cockroach Janata Party and youth after NEET UG paper leak, now the administration has increased the strictness here. Barricades are being made permanent    

The administration has started welding by connecting all the barricades installed in front and behind Jantar Mantar. The objective is clear – not to allow the protesters to move beyond a certain limit. Officials say that during the earlier protests, people used to move ahead by pushing or removing the barricades.

Now if the barricades are solid and connected then it will not be so easy to break or cross them. This action is being taken after the recent demonstration of Cockroach Janata Party. The administration is taking these steps keeping in mind any big or violent demonstration that may happen in the future.

Demonstration of left student organizations continues   

Meanwhile, students associated with left organizations have also reached Jantar Mantar. Their main demand is that police action against students and protesters should be stopped immediately. The protesters have called it a breach of promise. The students allege that force was used against the youth who came to express their views peacefully. They are raising slogans regarding this and demanding answers from the government.

Paramilitary and police deployment   

Security arrangements are already tight at Jantar Mantar. A large number of personnel of paramilitary force, Delhi Police and other security forces are deployed at the spot. Welding work is also going on amidst these security arrangements. Police barricades and surveillance have been increased around the barricades so that no one can enter without permission.

What is the intention of the administration?      

Delhi administration argues that Jantar Mantar is an important protest site of the national capital. There are protests here every day on different issues. Many times the crowd goes out of control and tries to break the barricades, which leads to deterioration of law and order.

That is why this time the barricades are being made permanent. After welding, these will become a kind of iron wall. The administration believes that this will make it easier to control future demonstrations and the possibility of any kind of violence will be less.

At present there is a tense situation at Jantar Mantar. On one hand the administration is taking strict action, while on the other hand student organizations are raising their voice against the police action. It remains to be seen in which direction this matter goes in the coming days.
