Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the teenage batting sensation, has now been entrusted with yet another important responsibility in his nascent career. Sooryavanshi has been picked up as the vice-captain of the East Zone team in the Duleep Trophy 2026-27 edition. He will captain alongside Ishan Kishan in an impressive squad that also features India’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami.
Sooryavanshi has certainly caught the eyes of the selectors. Despite being just 15 years old, the teenager has managed to make a name for himself with his fearless batting style.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gets an important leadership position
This year has been a good one for Sooryavanshi. He made headlines in the franchise cricket format and got his first call to represent India before making his international debut in the second T20I match between India and England at Manchester in the last few days.
He was outstanding during the recent T20I series between India and Zimbabwe. The left-handed opener had his best performance in the third T20I match between the two teams in Harare, where he scored 81 runs off 49 balls. His performance was a statement in itself and showed that the youngster has the ability to perform in international cricket despite being young.
Now, he has been rewarded with the position of vice-captain by East Zone. This is an important phase in his career and will give him a chance to understand the leadership aspect of the game while playing with senior cricketers.
The presence of experienced cricketers like Ishan Kishan and Mohammed Shami will make life easier for the youngster in terms of gaining experience in the game.

Mohammed Shami makes comeback to Indian team on cards
The other big name who made the cut in the East Zone team is that of Mohammed Shami. This experienced fast bowler has been surprisingly omitted from the Test squad against Sri Lanka; however, playing in Duleep Trophy offers him an opportunity to get back in the reckoning.
This is the last time he played for India in March at the Champions Trophy event. He still remains one of the more experienced fast bowlers in India and would be leading the pace bowling brigade for the East Zone. Mukesh Kumar and Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal of Bengal would join him in the bowing unit to form a very strong team of bowlers.
Coming to the batting unit, the presence of Abhimanyu Easwaran, who has proven himself to be one of the most consistent batters in domestic cricket, would certainly be a plus for the team.
East Zone have made a balanced team selection
East Zone have made a team selection that includes a number of both experienced cricketers as well as young talent. Other than Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Shami and Abhimanyu Easwaran, there are a few domestic cricketers who have been performing consistently during the past few seasons.
Kumar Kushagra of Jharkhand, Anukul Roy, Virat Singh and Shikhar Mohan have all been picked up in the squad. Subhranshu Senapati of Odisha and Denish Das of Assam have also made it to the squad on the back of their domestic performances.
However, perhaps the most talked about inclusion in the squad is that of Sooryavanshi who will be named as the vice-captain of the squad. At the age of just 15, Sooryavanshi has been handed the responsibility of being the vice-captain of the side.
A good show in the Duleep Trophy will further boost Sooryavanshi’s case, while the likes of Mohammed Shami and Abhimanyu Easwaran can use the chance to impress the national selectors.
