Reports in Italy say that Milan head coach Ruben Amorim has asked the club to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Olympique de Marseille this summer, but the Rossoneri will first have to move on a number of unwanted players before adding any new midfield reinforcements.

Milan, operating under a new leadership structure this summer, have already set a new club record with the signing of Goncalo Ramos, and have also made a major investment in centre-back Mario Gila’s arrival from Lazio.

Amorim, though, wants to completely reshape Milan’s style of play this summer and is aiming to build a possession-based side with high intensity, aggressive pressing, and the ability to recover the ball high up the pitch. That is essentially the opposite of what supporters had become used to under Massimiliano Allegri’s defensive approach.

To assemble a team capable of playing in the manner he wants, Amorim is still looking at several new signings, and according to reports from Calciomercato.com, Marseille midfielder Hojbjerg is one of the Rossoneri’s top targets.

Wednesday’s report says Amorim has made a specific request for Milan to sign the midfielder this summer.

However, that can only happen if several current Milan players are first moved on. The midfield area is already quite well covered with Luka Modric, Adrien Rabiot, Youssouf Fofana, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Yunus Musah, Samuele Ricci, Ardon Jashari, Warren Bondo and promising teenager Christian Comotto.

Calciomercato says Milan need to sell two of their current midfielders before bringing in any fresh options in the middle of the park. At present, Ricci and Fofana are said to be the most likely names to be sold.
