BIMCO-ICS Seafarer Workforce Report 2026: India has made a major achievement in the global maritime industry. India has now become the second largest supplier of seafarers in the world. According to the BIMCO-ICS Seafarer Workforce Report 2026 released on the global supply of maritime workers, India’s share has increased significantly in the last five years.
According to the report, India’s share in the total number of maritime workers working worldwide has now reached 12.2 percent. This achievement reflects India’s growing maritime skills, training regime and the strong presence of Indian seafarers in the global shipping industry.
Philippines still the world’s largest supplier of sailors
The Philippines still remains at the first position in terms of supply of seafarers globally. The Philippines has long been the world’s largest supplier of maritime workers. However, India has made rapid progress in the last few years and has almost doubled its share. Experts believe that the reason for the increasing demand for Indian maritime professionals is their technical proficiency, training level and ability to work as per international standards.
BIMCO-ICS Seafarer Workforce Report is considered one of the most important reports in the maritime sector. The report is published every five years and analyzes the availability, demand and future needs of the maritime workforce around the world. This report is considered a reliable source in the global maritime industry to understand the number of seafarers and the state of the workforce. In this, a detailed assessment of the role and contribution of maritime workers coming from different countries is made.
The biggest strength of Indian sailors is in the officer cadre.
India’s growing strength is particularly visible in the Merchant Navy officer cadre. According to the report, India is providing a large number of trained maritime officers to the world. According to an official, India supplies more than 1.4 lakh maritime officers, which is about 13.4 percent of the global officer workforce.
Apart from this, a large number of Indian sailors are also working in the supporting category i.e. Ratings. The number of Indian ratings is said to be around 1.7 lakh, which is about 11.29 per cent of merchant ship ratings worldwide. These figures show that India is strengthening its role not only in terms of numbers but also in important technical and operational areas of the maritime industry.
