Car industry leaders ask new PM Andy Burnham to reassess EV sales rules. Here’s why

New Prime Minister Andy Burnham has been urged by industry leaders to move ahead with the government’s planned review of the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate and to place the automotive industry at the centre of his wider agenda to reindustrialise Britain.
These calls were made by Mike Hawes, chief of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), alongside the publication of car and commercial vehicle production figures for the first half of 2026.
