New Delhi:Mini has previewed a new off-road-inspired version of the Countryman, which is set to debut in October. It has been revealed as a prototype, the new iteration comes with changes to suspension and styling. All of these are aimed to improve its off-roading capability and come as part of the brand’s scheme to widen its range with more lifestyle-focused editions.

The prototype shows a more adventure-focused approach with higher ground clearance, rugged all-terrain tyres and a roof-mounted tent, pointing to its outdoor-oriented character. Mini has released images of the vehicle undergoing testing at Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. Mini has said that the model is being made for gravel tracks, rocky terrain and remote mountains, while remaining composed on paved surfaces.

Countryman will be capable of tackling both rough terrain and smooth roadways

Mini head Jean-Philippe Parain noted that the brand was close to revealing the production-spec version. It is scheduled to make its global debut in October. Mini design chief Holger Hampf has said that the upcoming Countryman iteration has been built in response to the rising demand for vehicles that support outdoor activities and weekend getaways. He also confirmed that the production model will take cues from the Vagabund concepts showcased earlier this year, which gave the Countryman a more rugged and adventure-focused identity.

The new derivative is part of Mini’s wider strategy to introduce more special editions and expand personalisation options through lifestyle-based variants and collaborations.

In India, the current Mini Countryman comes with two petrol engine options. The Countryman C uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that produces 156 hp and 240 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

The more performance-oriented Countryman JCW All4 has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine delivering 300 hp and 400Nm of torque. It comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system. Mini claims the JCW version can accelerate from standstill to 100kph in 5.4 seconds.
