NEET UG Counselling Process: If you or someone in your family is participating in the NEET UG counselling process, the Central Government has announced some major, welcome news. To make the medical admission process easier, transparent, and stress-free, the Ministry of Health has introduced several historic changes to the counselling rules. The most significant reform is that candidates wishing to upgrade their college will no longer need to repeatedly visit their allotted medical colleges in person.

Implemented following a review meeting by Health Minister JP Nadda, these new NEET UG rules introduce systems for 'one-time physical reporting' and 'online document verification.' This means that if you are allotted a seat in the first or second round of counselling but desire a better college, you will not have to rush to another city or college each time. The entire process can now be completed online via your mobile phone or laptop.

One-time physical reporting: How will the new rule work?
Under the old rules, if a candidate was allotted a college in the first round, they had to visit it in person. Even if they hoped to upgrade to a better college in the second round, they still had to make trips to the allotted college to submit their documents. Under the Ministry of Health's new rules, if a seat is allotted in the first or second round, you can have your documents verified and secure provisional admission online from the comfort of your home. This will save time and money, and eliminate the hassle of running around.

Understanding the 'Float' and 'Freeze' options

During NEET UG counselling, candidates will have two crucial options:
Float: If you have been allotted a seat but wish to secure a better college in the next round, choose 'Float.' This ensures your current seat remains secure while your documents are verified online. If you secure a better college in the subsequent round, your previous seat will automatically be transferred to another candidate.

Freeze: If you are satisfied with the allotted seat or decide to retain the seat after the third round, you should choose 'Freeze.' Subsequently, candidates must visit the respective college for physical reporting, submit original documents, and pay the fees.

**Major Reforms in Online Resignation and NRI Quota**

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has taken two additional significant steps to streamline the NEET UG counselling process:

*   **Online Seat Resignation:** Candidates wishing to surrender their allotted seat no longer need to visit the college in person; they can now resign from their seat online via the MCC portal.

*   **Dedicated Portal for NRI Quota:** Previously, NRI quota documents were submitted via email, often leading to issues like emails landing in spam folders or getting lost. A dedicated portal has now been created to facilitate direct online verification.

**Cybersecurity and Special Provisions for PwBD Candidates**

Strict cybersecurity measures have been implemented to prevent malpractice and irregularities during the NEET UG counselling process. A system has been developed in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) that automatically fetches (pre-populates) data from the NTA. Additionally, to assist Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) aspirants, the number of assessment centres has been increased from 16 to 61. Furthermore, an appellate board has been constituted in accordance with revised NMC guidelines to address and resolve any grievances.
