NEET UG 2027 Normalization Process: For the lakhs of students aspiring to pursue medical studies, the NEET exam is set to undergo significant changes. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has decided to make major alterations to the NEET UG exam pattern to enhance its security and fairness. Instead of the traditional pen-and-paper (OMR sheet) format, NEET UG 2027 will be conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT)—an online mode.

More than 20 lakh candidates appear for the NEET UG exam annually. Consequently, conducting the exam in a single shift on a single day is not feasible in the online mode. Therefore, NEET UG 2027 will be held over several days across multiple shifts. With exams taking place in different shifts, it is natural for the difficulty level of the question paper to vary—some shifts might have tougher papers, while others might have easier ones. To ensure fairness and parity amidst these variations, a normalization process—specifically a percentile-based marking system—is being introduced for NEET for the first time.

How will the NEET UG exam be conducted in 2027?
Starting in 2027, the pen-and-paper method for NEET UG will be discontinued. Candidates will view questions on a computer screen and select the correct answer using a mouse. The most significant change is that the NEET UG exam will be conducted over a span of 5–6 days across approximately 15–20 shifts. The syllabus (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and the total marks (720) pattern will remain unchanged. Unlike the OMR sheet method—where a marked circle could not be altered—the CBT mode allows candidates to change their answers as many times as they wish or mark questions for later review.

What is normalization, and how will it affect scores?

When an exam is conducted across multiple shifts, the difficulty level of questions can vary slightly from shift to shift; some students might face tougher questions, while others encounter easier ones. To address this disparity, the NTA will employ a 'normalization' process, similar to the one used for JEE Main and CUET. Under normalization, a student's performance is not judged solely by their 'raw marks'; instead, their score is compared against the performance of other students who appeared in the same shift. Here is how it works: Suppose the paper for your shift was very difficult, and you scored 620 marks. Meanwhile, the paper for another shift was quite easy, and a candidate there scored 640 marks. In this scenario, after normalization, your percentile score could actually be better than that of the candidate who scored 640, because you performed exceptionally well under challenging conditions. Normalization balances out the difficulty levels of the papers, ensuring fairness for all candidates.

How should NEET 2027 aspirants adjust their preparation?
If you are planning to take the NEET UG exam in 2027 or later, rote learning alone will not suffice. You should immediately incorporate these four major changes into your study routine:

Develop screen-reading habits: You will need to read questions on a computer screen for over three hours. Therefore, cultivate the habit of taking online mock tests. Alongside reading from books, practice reading long questions from PDFs and digital platforms.

Move beyond OMR practice; get comfortable with the CBT interface: Instead of practicing with OMR sheets, join an online mock test series. Use the NTA’s 'National Test Abhyas' app or the online test portal of a reputable coaching institute. This will help you get used to clicking buttons and marking questions for review.

Focus on accuracy: In a normalization scenario, negative marking can be very detrimental. Avoid guesswork and attempt only those questions you are absolutely confident about.

Rely on concepts: Stop worrying about whether your shift’s paper will be easy or difficult. If you have a deep understanding of NCERT concepts, your percentile score will remain strong under any circumstances within the normalization system.

Begin your preparation only after thoroughly understanding the NEET UG syllabus, exam pattern, and marking scheme. Even if you have appeared for NEET UG previously, review everything afresh and create a new study schedule.
