The 17th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne ( IFFM ) is set to celebrate Malayalam cinema with a compelling line-up of feature films and short films. This year's selection reflects a "legacy of socially relevant themes, and fearless exploration of complex human emotions", offering audiences an engaging mix of contemporary voices and cinematic excellence.

The Malayalam showcase will feature Avihitham (An Illicit Affair), which explores the emotional and moral dilemmas surrounding human relationships; Kaathirippu (Await), which offers a poignant narrative centered on hope, longing, and the passage of time. Khidki Gaav (If on a Winter's Night) presents a reflective and deeply human story, bringing together themes of memory, belonging, and life's unexpected encounters, according to a statement from the festival.


"Adding to the diverse slate is Moham (Desire), which delves into the complexities of human emotions and aspirations, while private presents an intimate narrative that explores personal relationships and the choices that define them. Sheshippu (The Remnant) offers a moving exploration of what remains after loss, both emotionally and socially, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit," read the statement, adding, "One of the most distinctive films in this year's programme is Thanthapperu (Life of a Phallus), a bold and unconventional work that reflects Malayalam cinema's willingness to tackle challenging themes and spark meaningful conversations through fearless storytelling."

The festival will also showcase two Malayalam short films that highlight the creativity of emerging filmmakers. Switch Off offers a contemporary narrative through the short film format, while Kuttikkali (Child's Play) presents a sensitive and engaging story that captures the innocence, imagination, and emotional complexities of childhood.
