On Thursday, Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a letter, expressing concerns over a significant reduction in central scholarship assistance exceeding ₹700 crores over the past two financial years. This shortfall has severely impacted millions of students, prompting Soren to request the Prime Minister's intervention to resolve the issue.
In his correspondence, Soren urged Modi to reinstate financial aid specifically for minority students and to enhance central allocations for scholarships both before and after matriculation. He highlighted that Jharkhand had requested ₹370.87 crores for post-matric scholarships for the year 2025-26, yet the central government only approved ₹58.22 crores.
Similarly, for the fiscal year 2024-25, the state sought ₹353.21 crores but received a mere ₹33.57 crores. Soren warned that this drastic funding shortage has led to delays in scholarship disbursements for countless students, jeopardizing their educational pursuits. He also pointed out the economic challenges facing the state, noting that under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment's scholarship schemes for backward caste students, Jharkhand requested ₹66.14 crores for pre-matric scholarships in 2024-25, but only ₹12.61 crores were allocated by the center. For 2025-26, the state sought ₹45.91 crores, yet only ₹3.95 crores were released.
